CBE:  The Key to Overcoming - Revelation 1:9-11
Jesus says, “for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God” (Rev. 3:2)

What we learn from the Seven Churches: Revelation 2:1 – 3:22
  1. DOMESTICED GOD.

  • Our deeds can only be complete when we are obedient and surrendered to the person of Jesus.
  1. DRIFTED FROM JESUS AND HIS TEACHING.

  • And the further you drift from god and His Word, the more treacherous are the consequences.
  1. REMAINED DEFILED BY THE WORLD.

  • Not all of any culture is bad; but some is an offense to God and a hindrance to the one’s faith.
Jesus had more confidence in His church than that. Do you remember what he said when he first introduced the idea of “church” to the disciples? He said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:18).
Let me Remind you about how Jesus interacts with His church …  I John 2:1-6
  • Jesus comes as one who STANDS with us.

  • Jesus comes as one who is STRONGER than the threats.

  • Jesus comes as one who is SUPERIOR to our sin.

  •  Jesus comes as one who is more SECURE that life itself.
It is only Jesus who is able to “keep you from falling and present you faultless before the throne” (Jude 24). Apart from Him we can do nothing.

That is another core understanding of Wesleyan-Holiness theology …
it is based on grace, not law; it serves from love not “should and ought”.

It believes that the Spirit of Jesus that indwells the church has the ability to correct our course and empower us to live loving lives that please Him!

The Key to Overcoming is:
 To Return to Jesus:
just as he called these first seven churches in Revelation to do!

CBE - “Your Life Matters to the World” I Peter 1:13-25

Because we have hope:
Our Lives Matter to the World and our response is to live a life of HOLINESS.
Holiness: a different life, one set apart for God. What does that look like?
  • Control Your Mind - vs 13:

We need to have an alert mind –

We also need a disciplined mind –

We also need a focused mind –

  • Imitate Your Master – vs.14-16:

One reason we live differently than the world is because we want to be just like Jesus. That’s the definition of a disciple:
…one who seeks to be just like the master in every way.

Eph. 5:1 – “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children.”
Romans 12 – “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

  • Look to the Scriptures - vs 16:

  • Anticipate Coming Judgment – vs 17:

2 Corinthians 5:10 – “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due to him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”
  • Confirm Your Faith - vs 18-21:

God’s desire is that we live abundant lives, lives lived out to the fullest.

Why?

Your life matters to God and to the World!

Community Bible Experience “Don’t Hide Christ”

Hebrews is not a book to be feared, avoided, or selectively picked through;
it is a book of great benefit to the people of God.

Hebrews 1:1-3, “In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”

Hebrews is about a community … a “tribal village” if you please…
Villagers:
• Hunt together • Cook together                                  • Eat together • Play together
• Nurse / doctor together • Babysit together               • Clean together • Celebrate together
• Worship together • Laugh together                          • Cry together • Die together

HEBREWS IS: A BOOK OF EVALUATION!

HEBREWS IS: A BOOK OF EXHORTATION!
Some of the Christians were not making spiritual progress and were in danger of regressing:
  • Drifting from the Word (2:1-4)
  • Doubting the Word (3:7 – 4:13)

  • Dullness toward the Word (5:11 – 6:20)

  • Despising the Word (10:26-39)

  • Defying the Word (12:14-29)

“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

By now you are familiar with our Mission: Journeying together to be a Blessing.”
Everyone Christian is Called to Be a Disciple:
• A Mentor to assist them on the spiritual journey
• A Fellow-Traveler to walk alongside them as they follow Jesus
• A Mentee to pass on their spiritual insight and to encourage.

HEBREWS IS: A BOOK OF EXAMINATION!
 “What/Who am I really trusting?”
And you will discover that the only good answer is “Jesus Christ.”

Look with me at Amos 5:18-24

They were God’s chosen people, but they were not living as God’s chosen people.
  • THEY WERE HIDING CHRIST…ARE WE…?

AND HEBREWS IS:  IT IS A BOOK OF EXPECTATION!
The author is “confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation” (Hebrews 6:9).
I like how Peter says it in his first epistle: “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” (1 Peter 1:3)

Community Bible Experience – “It’s about the Kingdom”
Matthew 23:1-12

Three Strategies you can use to be a person who lives for God’s approval.
Society honors outward appearance, but God honors humility.
  • Make Scripture, not others, your standard for life.

  • Avoid living a “showcase” religion.

Why it’s Dangerous to Live just for the Approval of Others:
* Seeking approval from people brings only that – if that.

* Seeking approval from people can get in the way of real faith in Christ.
John 5:44, “How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God?”

* Seeking approval from people can keep you from obeying Christ.
Galatians 1:10, “Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

  • Work on developing a servant’s heart.

Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

James 4:10, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

Jesus points out the Pharisees love to burden people with heavy loads.
But listen to how Jesus describes Himself in Matthew 11: 28!

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

    David Craig, Pastor

I began my journey as the Lead Pastor in June 2011.  Prior to coming to Shreveport I served in Texas, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.  I studied religion and music at Southern Nazarene University and received my M.A. degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary.

I was raised in a Christian home where I was exposed to the Lord at an early age.  As a junior in high school I felt a call to serve Jesus for a lifetime in the ministry.

I and my wife, Dawn, have two sons. Caleb is a graduate of Southern Nazarene University and Adam attends ULM in Monroe, La

In my spare time I enjoy sports of all kinds, but especially the Texas Longhorns.
