Jesus Plan to Handle Life’s Hurts – “Recycling My Pain”

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over." Psalms 23:5 (NKJV)

WRONG WAYS TO HANDLE HURT
  • IGNORE IT

"I was mute with silence, I held my peace even from good; And my sorrow was stirred up." Psalms 39:2 (NKJV)
  • RUN FROM IT

“If only I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. How far away I would flee; I would stay in the wilderness. I would hurry to my shelter from the raging wind and the storm.” Psalms 55:6-8 (HCSB)
  • HIDE IT

"Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed." James 5:16 (HCSB)
  • WORRY OVER IT

"Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." Colossians 3:2-3 (NKJV)
  • BECOME BITTER ABOUT IT

"…man’s anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness." James 1:20 (HCSB)

THREE RIGHT WAYS TO DEAL WITH HURT
"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over." Psalms 23:5 (NKJV)
  • Let Jesus PROTECT YOU

  • Let Jesus HEAL YOU

  • Let Jesus BLESS YOU

“How does Jesus bless you?”

Are you living an overflowing life?
Are you living in God’s abundance?
Are you living in God’s victory?

Let me tell you, if you have Jesus as your savior you can say:
My cup runs over with HOPE,
My cup runs over with LOVE,
My cup runs over with JOY!

Jesus Plan to Handle Life’s Hurts – “Maintaining Momentum”
Nehemiah 4:6-15

What happens after graduation or an accomplishment…

Depression and discouragement, wanting to give up, is
one of mankind's deadliest diseases.
It is universal, recurring, contagious, but it is curable!
Jesus Has a Plan for us…

Four Causes of Depression & Discouragement

1. Fatigue - we just get tired. (4:10a) "the strength of the laborers is giving out."

  • When does discouragement usually come? When you're half done!

2. Frustration - (4:10b) "and there is so much rubble"

  • What is the rubble in your life?  The rubble creates frustration.

3. Failure - (4:10c) "we cannot rebuild the wall"

  • What happens to you if you don't reach your goal on time?  How do
   you respond to failure?

This is one of the most important questions you will have to face in
your life, because sometimes you will fail.

4. Fear - (4:11) "Also our enemies said, "Before they know it, or see us, we will be right
there among them and will kill them and put an end to the work."

  • What fear is causing you to be depressed & discouraged?

Biblical Cures for Depression & Discouragement

  • Rest your body.             (Psalm 127:2, TLB) (1 Kings 19:4-6)

  • Re-organize your life.       (Nehemiah 4:13)

  • Remember the Lord.  (Nehemiah 4:14)

Remember these 3 things:

God's goodness in the past. (Psalm 126:3)
God's closeness in the present. (Matthew 28:20)
God's power for the future. (Philippians 4:13)

  • Resist the discouragement.  (Nehemiah 4:14)

The difference between success and failure is
that successful people just never, never, never, never, never give up!

Let Jesus help you maintain your momentum!

Jesus Plan to Handle Life’s Hurts – “Repairing Relationships”
Luke 15:11-24

Last Week:
The REBELLION of the Son (Luke 15:11-13)
The REACTION of the Father (Luke 15:12-16)

There is HOPE!
The REGRET of the Son (Luke 15:17-19)

The Question:
When is my kid going to wake up?
When will they come to their senses?

Notice the 3-fold change of attitude the son goes through.

  • Re-evaluation  "I am starving to death" (vs 17)

  • Regret       "I will go back to my father" (vs 18)

  • Repentance     "Father, I have sinned" (vs 18)

Compare the son's change of attitude, before verses after!
In vs 12, his attitude is, "Give me"
In vs 19, his attitude is, "Make me"

The RETURN of the Son              (Luke 15:20-24)

As parents, we need to do three things.

         1. Love them faithfully.   (You never give up your hope!)

         2. Accept them unconditionally.

         3. Forgive them completely.

The two things the Father did.      (Luke 15:22-23)

  • He brought out the best robe - a sign of sonship.

  • He put a ring on his finger - a sign of credit!
By this, the Father gave him immediate responsibility!

Ask yourself today…

"Does forgiveness need to flow in my home?"
Should it begin with me?

Where/Who Do I need to begin to Repair Relationships?

Jesus Plan to Handle Life’s Hurts – “Making Changes”
Luke 15:11-24

Let's examine the 4 stages we need to be aware of.

The REBELLION of the Son (Luke 15:11-13)
The REACTION of the Father (Luke 15:12-16)
The REGRET of the Son (Luke 15:17-19)
The RETURN of the Son (Luke 15:20-24)

The REBELLION of the Son (Luke 15:11-13)

  • It's in every parent-child relationship -- the struggle for control.
  • Parental control is not permanent!
  • All children have a sin nature.  (Romans 3:23)
  • The root of rebellion - "Father, give me!" (Luke 15:12)
                       1. Rebellion is unpredictable.
                        2. Rebellion is not age-related.

The REACTION of the Father (Luke 15:12-16)

  • Three Steps The Father Took That We Should Take!

         1. Let them go. (Luke 15:12)

         2. Let them make their own mistakes.    (Luke 15:13)

“We learn valuable lessons from pain we experience”.  (Proverbs 20:30)

When we take responsibility for our children, we take it
away from them.

         3. Let them reap the consequences of their own choices.

"After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in
that whole country, and he began to be in need."  (Lk 15:14)

"Do not be deceived...a man reaps what he sows."   (Gal 6:7)

PRINCIPLES TO REMEMBER
You are not the only influence in your child's life!
Parent responsibility ends where there is no control!
Nature has a way of disciplining children in ways we can't.

What Do You Do While You Wait?

  • You pray.

"The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of this world.  They have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every  thought to make it obedient to Christ."      (2 Cor 10:3-5)

  • You commit them to God.

"Don't be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be  transformed by the renewing of your mind."   (Romans 12:2)

  • You wait.

“Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14

THE HOPE…

And from the son
there finally came both regret and a return.

    David Craig, Pastor

I began my journey as the Lead Pastor in June 2011.  Prior to coming to Shreveport I served in Texas, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.  I studied religion and music at Southern Nazarene University and received my M.A. degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary.

I was raised in a Christian home where I was exposed to the Lord at an early age.  As a junior in high school I felt a call to serve Jesus for a lifetime in the ministry.

I and my wife, Dawn, have two sons. Caleb is a graduate of Southern Nazarene University and Adam attends ULM in Monroe, La

In my spare time I enjoy sports of all kinds, but especially the Texas Longhorns.
